If you're going to use food on the training field, it's polite to pick up missed food, or let the dog pick it up. Some people say, "If the dog misses the food, the dog cannot get it from the ground." This method is excellent, but then the handler must get the food. It is very distracting to try to heal a young dog, or teach the "Platz" or "Down" command with a ton of food on the ground. It's best to use this method at the local park. This happened at our last summer trial. We were all tracking, and someone came to the field to practice, and there was chicken pieces all over the field. A lady doing her first Bh had a very difficult time getting her dog's focus with choice pieces of chicken all over. For an advanced dog, it's great practice, but for a very young dog, it's very difficult.

I agree. It's not respectful to teams that come after. I'm always picking up food off of your field. Mostly pet ob handlers.
